well It is generally believed that the energy-converting organelles of eucaryotes evolved from procaryotes that were engulfed by primitive eucaryotic cells and developed a symbiotic relationship with them. This would explain why mitochondria and chloroplasts contain their own DNA, which codes for some of their proteins......
