Since Greece is an archipelago with lots of high mountains, Greece began and was primarily comprised of city-states, such as Athens and Sparta. Maritime technology developed quickly and was of great importance for trade and warfare. The physical barriers between Greek city-states causes each to have mostly unique cultures and law, though most shared the same pantheon of gods.
