Paine's main purpose when writing "Common Sense" was to increase colonial support for independence. Paine believed that the colonists were being treated unfairly by Great Britain, and that they would be better off if they were independent. He believed his case was extremely strong, and easy enough to be understood by everyone, which is why he named his work "Common Sense."
